Studied conducting under the guidance of Lucas Vis, Hiroyuki Iwaki and Jorma Panula. His dynamically developing career, ever since his first invitations to give guest performances in Belgium, Holland and then England, Italy and Spain, has secured him an international reputation, numerous favorable reviews and an assured place on the European contemporary music scene. He has collaborated with such composers as Mauricio Kagel, György Kurtág, Péter Eötvös, Luca Francesconi, Michel Van der Aa, Louis Andriessen, Harrison Birtwistle, Peter Maxwell Davies and Philippe Boesmans. From 1992 to 1998, he was artistic director of the self-founded Prometheus Ensemble. In 2001, he assumed the post of resident director of the Flemish Radio Orchestra, and a year later conducted Cornelius de Bondt’s monumental Karkas at the Holland Festival. He has conducted performances of Louis Andriessen’s De Staat with the Nederlands Blazersensemble, Harrison Birtwistle’s Theseus Game with the Asko|Schönberg Ensemble at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and Klangforum Wien during the Wien Modern Festival, as well as the world première of a new Luca Francesconi opera. He has accepted invitations from the Rotterdam and The Hague Philharmonics, Asko|Schönberg Ensemble, musikFabrik, Klangforum Wien, Psappha Ensemble, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Flanders Philharmonic Orchestra, L’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Rouen and Collegium Vocale Gent. The artist has also collaborated with such soloists as Barbara Hannigan, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, José van Dam, Christianne Stotijn, Quirine Viersen, Frank Braley, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Claron McFadden and Pieter Wispelwey. From 2004 to 2010, he was standing conductor of the Flanders Symphony Orchestra and has recently begun standing collaborations with I Solisti del Vento and Asko|Schönberg Ensemble. The artist’s discography includes recordings of works by Michel van der Aa and Martijn Padding with, among other ensembles, Klangforum Wien and the Flanders Symphony Orchestra.
