David Lang

David Lang is an enormously prolific composer, an impersonation of the restless spirit of imagination. For The Little Match Girl Passion, commissioned by Carnegie Hall for Paul Hiller’s vocal group and Theater of Voices, the composer received the Pulitzer Prize 2008. The catalogue of his works is extremely wide – a large part of his oeuvre is aimed at extending the definition of virtuosity in music – even the apparently simple pieces can prove extremely difficult to perform and require concentration from musicians and the audience alike. David Lang is one of the most frequently performed American composers. Apart from the mentioned Pulitzer Prize, he is a winner of many other awards and special mentions, including Rome Prize, BMW Music-Theater Prize (Munich) and scholarships of the Guggenheim Foundation, Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts and American Academy of Arts and Letters. Lang is also one of the founders and artistic directors of the legendary musical collective, Bang on a Can. Pieces composed by him have been published by such labels as Sony Classical, Harmonia Mundi, Teldec, BMG, Point, Chandos, Argo/Decca and Cantaloupe. Composer’s music is released by Red Poppy (ASCAP), and world-wide distribution is provided by G. Schirmer, Inc.
