Daniel Variations (2006)« backA musical epitaph for American journalist and violinist Daniel Pearl, who died in 2003 in Pakistan, having been kidnapped by Muslim terrorists and murdered personally by Khaled Sheikh Mohammed. In the work, fragments from the Biblical Book of Daniel and texts by Pearl himself have been utilized. A composition scored for six sopranos, six tenors, instrumental ensemble and choir. It betrays a stylistic kinship with Variations for Winds, Strings and Keyboards from 1979, in which the artist alluded for the first time to the traditional system of Biblical cantillation. |
