St. Luke Pasion, by Krzysztof Penderecki, directed by Grzegorz Jarzyna
Add date: Tuesday, 31 January 2012

On March 31st and April 1st 2012, Alvernia Studios near Krakow will host a preview performance of St. Luke Passion, by Krzysztof Penderecki, directed by Grzegorz Jarzyna. The show is being put on on the initiative of the National Audiovisual Institute as part of the summary of the Cultural Programme of the Polish Presidency 2011. The event will accompany the Misteria Paschalia Festival.

The brilliant Polish director has known The Passion since he was 16. His adventures in classical music started with listening to records by the outstanding composer. Krzysztof Penderecki wrote his most famous piece – St. Luke Passion (Passio et Mors Domini Nostri Jesu Christi secundum Lucam) between 1963 and 1965, commissioned by the German radio station Westdeutscher Rundfunk for the seven hundredth anniversary of the creation of Münster Cathedral. It was there that on March 30th 1966, the world premiere of the piece took place, conducted by Henryk Czyż. The composer also took into account the one thousandth anniversary of the christening of Poland, which was also celebrated that year. From thevery beginning, the piece has always been widely popular. Over seventy journalists from across Europe arrived in Münster for the concert, including the papal nuncio and the bishop of Münster, as well as the director of Westdeutscher Rundfunk. That same year, the Passion was included in the programme of the contemporary music biennale in Venice. In later years it was performed all over Europe, the United States, South America and Japan. Numerous recordings have also been released.

In his piece, Krzysztof Penderecki revived anold musical form mostly associated with Johann Sebastian Bach, but with roots in medieval religious mystery, adapting it to modern times, both as regards the musical means of expression and the concept itself. Using a modern language, Penderecki created a piece accessible to ordinary music enthusiasts, with comprehensible content, construction and emotions.

What will the new Passion be like, reinterpreted and brought to the stage by Grzegorz Jarzyna? Will it herald the beginning of a successful cooperation between the two giants, Jarzyna and Penderecki?

Vocal parts will be performed by Iwona Hossa – soprano, Piotr Nowacki – bass and Thomas Bauer – baritone. The soloists will be accompanied by Katowice’s CAMERATA SILESIA singers’ ensemble, the PUERI CANTORES SANCTI NICOLAI boys’ choir and AUKSO Chamber Orchestra of the Town of Tychy conducted by Krzysztof Penderecki.
